May 7, 2019
Dear Church Family,
As I closed our service on Sunday, April 7, I shared with you that I was being considered to become the Executive Director of the Louisiana Baptist Convention. This afternoon, May 7, the Executive Board of the Louisiana Baptist Convention voted to call me to this position, and I have accepted. The call to this position means that I formally give you my resignation as pastor.
The toughest part of saying “yes” throughout this whole process was the knowledge that I would have to resign as your pastor. Every pastor ought to have an opportunity to experience being the pastor of such a gracious and loving congregation as First Baptist Church of Lafayette. I always knew that to be true, but you have proven that to be especially true in this last month. Linett and I want to thank you for your gracious spirit in this last month as we waited for the confirmation.
Please know of our great love for you. Please know of our continued prayers for you. Please know of our continued partnership in the gospel with you. In fact, I like to think that I am being reassigned instead of resigning.
I will preach on Sunday, May 12, and Sunday, May 19. I look forward to these two Sundays. I plan to preach as passionately as ever and expect God to move people to respond to His message.
Tomorrow night (Wednesday, May 8), in a previously planned Church Business Conference, you will have the opportunity to hear and vote on several matters.
First, and most urgently, the Personnel Committee will present Dr. Reggie Ogea as candidate to be Interim Pastor. Dr. Ogea will preach on Sunday, May 26, and will be presented for vote to be Interim Pastor that same day.
Second, the Board of Trustees in partnership with the Deacons will present a recommendation to authorize the Personnel Committee to serve as the Pastor Search Committee.
Third, the Committee on Committees will present Monica Hornsby to serve an unexpired term on the Personnel Committee so as to ensure that this is a full committee as they begin their important work.
Thank you for your support over these nearly 14 years. I pray that you will unify as never before in the history of our church to trust God with these details. I will be praying.
All for His Glory,
